[Sydney] Cumberland Golf Club - West Sydney's golf course

by SydGolfnTravel 2025. 7. 3.

Cumberland Country Golf Club, located in Greystanes, west of Sydney, is a golf course about 15 minutes by car from Parramatta. It opened in 1935 as a 9-hole course and in 1938 it became the current 18-hole golf course, and has been loved by local residents and golfers for nearly 100 years. It is a historic public course and is a representative golf course in the western part of Sydney.

Location and basic information

  • Address: 248 Dunmore Street, Greystanes NSW 2145
  • Course Type: Public Course
  • Course composition: 18 holes, par 71, total length approximately 6,200m, Slope Rating 123 (based on blue tee)

Course Features

The biggest advantage of Cumberland Golf Club's course is that it is a natural mix of flat land and gentle hills, making it easy for anyone to enjoy. Although there are ups and downs in some holes, unlike other golf clubs in the area, the golf course is entirely flat, allowing you to enjoy a round as if you were taking a walk.

With well-maintained trees along the holes, well-maintained fairways, bunkers around the greens, and water hazards throughout the course, no hole is monotonous, providing a new challenge on every hole and in every round.

.

The representative hole is the 6th par 4 hole. The length is about 350~370m, which is not a big burden, but the tee shot must go over the water, and the dogleg line that bends to the right and the thick line of old trees blocking the tee shot to the right create a difficult level of difficulty. Even if you hit the tee shot well, you have to be careful of the bunker in front of the green when attacking the green with the second shot, and if you go over the green, you will be left with a difficult approach shot. If you can make a par or birdie on the 6th hole, your score for the day will definitely be more than your handicap.

The greens at Cumberland are generally a bit small, and there is a little undulation, which makes putting quite difficult. At first glance, they may look flat, but in reality, there is a little slope and direction, making it difficult to read the putting line. It would be helpful if you have a member playing with you.

Lady Community

Cumberland Golf Club has a membership fee that is approximately 50% of that of men. Of course, there are men's golf competitions on Wednesdays and Saturdays, so women golfers can be considered members for five days a week, but even so, the 50% membership fee is attractive to women golfers. Because of its accessibility and relatively low prices, there are many female golfers, so they host various events at the golf course and have a positive influence on the golf club.

Latest Developments – Plans to Build Apartments on Part of Golf Course

The development of a residential apartment complex on part of the golf course and adjacent areas of Cumberland Golf Club is in full swing.
For several years, the club has been considering selling or jointly developing part of the site to a developer to improve aging facilities and stabilize finances. After preparatory work starting in 2024, full-scale development is scheduled to begin in 2025 when the development plan is approved.

As of now, the golf course is not disappearing or shrinking, but the layout of some holes is likely to change or the course area is likely to be reduced. Construction will be carried out in some areas in the coming years, which may inevitably lead to noise, changes in access routes, and temporary course operation. However, the club is promising to renovate the clubhouse, maintain and repair the course, and modernize the facilities through development profits, so golfers are in a situation where inconvenience and anticipation coexist.

Overall Review

Cumberland Golf Club is a place that represents the history of golf in western Sydney and is once again gaining attention as a place preparing for new changes. From the classic course and strategic play to the new look that future development will bring. If you want to experience the close proximity to Parramatta city center, a public golf course with over 90 years of tradition, and future changes all at once, Cumberland Golf Club is a place worth visiting in its own right.

It would certainly be meaningful to walk the current course before development and look forward to after development.
