There are many famous public courses in the suburbs of Sydney, but there is another charm to the traditional courses that have been created by local golfers for generations. Oak Point Golf Club is located in the Lansvale area, approximately 40 minutes drive southwest of Sydney's CBD.
It features a flat parkland-style layout set on the Georges River plains.
Course Features – Flat but not easy.
Oak Point Golf Club (formerly Liverpool Golf Club) is designed in a parkland style on a generally flat terrain.
However, it is not an easy course just because it is flat. Most holes on the course have creeks or ponds that affect the play, and the bunkers around the greens are well placed, so you can never let your guard down for a single shot.
The fairway is managed with Kikuyu grass, which is commonly found in Australian golf courses. Due to the nature of this grass, it runs less, so the distance feels quite long from the back tee. If the tee shot is not stable, a long second shot remains, making score management difficult.
(Note: Kikuyu grass is a warm-season grass common in Australia. Kikuyu is known for its strong growth and resilience, grows well in full sun, and is drought tolerant. It requires frequent mowing but is suitable for heavy use or large areas.)
Almost all holes have a dogleg shape to the left and right, so long shots are important, but many holes require accurate shots.
The greens are fast and have good curves, and have been maintained in good condition recently, so you need to be able to read the putting line well to make a good score.
Signature Holes and Playing Tips
Oak Point's signature hole is the last 18th hole, a par 3 (167m).
This not-so-short par 3 hole that returns to the clubhouse is psychologically the most tense hole, with a pond guarding the right side of the green, along with the pressure of the last hole.
The most difficult hole in the early part is the 2nd hole, a par 4 (420m). Due to the long distance and OB on the right, a stable yet long driver shot is required, and if it lands in the rough or hazard, it is not easy to save par.
A story that has continued for 100 years, and a course that has come back to life
The history of golf in the Liverpool area dates back to the early 20th century, but World War I put a damper on the game, and although a course was rebuilt at Mrs. Bull's Paddock in the late 1920s, it did not last long.
In 1931, a new layout was introduced on the Collingwood Estate, designed by Tommy Howard, father of Al Howard, and the course lasted through World War II until the early 1970s. However, it was eventually closed due to plans to cut a major road through the course, and the club had to move to a new site.
The current Liverpool Golf Club was born in this way and opened with a new 18-hole course designed by Bob Green on 110 acres of former dairy farmland. Prosper Creek and Georges River serve as boundaries and natural hazards for the course, and although the terrain is flat, ponds and creeks are placed throughout the course.
It's undergoing yet another transformation, recently renaming itself Oak Point Golf Club.
Floods and Recovery – Liverpool’s Resilience
Oak Point Golf Club (formerly Liverpool Golf Club) has experienced two floods in recent years.
In 2020, the entire course was flooded, requiring a long recovery period, but thanks to the efforts of the club and its members, it has been restored to its original state surprisingly quickly. Even today, a plaque on a tree on one side of the course records the water level at that time, giving visitors a sense of both the power of nature and the club’s resilience.
Competition history and lesson program
Oak Point Golf Club has hosted the Australian PGA, NSW Open (2006-2007) in the past due to its course quality, and has also been used as an Australian Open qualifier for the past 10 years.
We also offer a variety of lesson programs for local golfers. We offer step-by-step lessons from basic to advanced, especially for junior golfers, and we are also known as one of the best systematic golf academies in the Western Sydney area.
Overall Review
Oak Point Golf Club may have recently changed its name, but its 100-year-old golf tradition, high-level course maintenance, and service to members and guests remain unchanged.
We recommend spending a day at Oak Point Golf Club (formerly Liverpool Golf Club) in Western Sydney to experience a round of golf on a course that boasts a long history and resilience that has survived many crises, and to experience a recovery in your golf score.
