Sydney – Winter Rains Too Heavy
In August 2025, Sydney is experiencing constant rain. While the sky clears briefly, dark clouds soon gather again, pouring down heavy rain. It feels like a city truly living in the rain.
Much more rainfall than usual
Sydney's winters are typically relatively mild, with only occasional rain. But this year, things are quite different. It's not even the end of August yet, and rainfall this August has far exceeded the average for that time of year. The constant rain has even led to people joking, "Is this really Sydney?"

Golf courses closed, sporting events canceled
When it rains heavily, the first things to be affected are various sporting events and outdoor activities.
On golf courses, fairways are muddy and slushy, and greens are dull and waterlogged, making them unplayable. Golf courses across Sydney are announcing closures one after another, increasing the frustration of golfers eagerly awaiting their weekend rounds. Even my club has only been open for four days in August.

The same goes for sporting events. Australia's vibrant outdoor sports culture has been put on hold. With soccer matches, running events, and even neighborhood cricket matches being canceled one after another, it's no exaggeration to say that this is the season where rain takes center stage.
The unfortunate situation of travelers
Even more heartbreaking are the tourists who have returned to Sydney after a long absence. Those who were trying to enjoy the sunshine at Bondi Beach are now forced to stare out the window of a cafe, buffeted by waves, wind, and heavy rain. Those who have visited the Blue Mountains sigh in disappointment at the sight of a landscape engulfed in fog and rain clouds.
Of course, rainy Sydney has its own charm. The raindrops falling on the Opera House resemble a scene from a black-and-white film, and the wet lights of Darling Harbour create a romantic atmosphere. However, for travelers who come expecting Sydney's blue skies and seas, it can be a bit disappointing.
Everyday inconveniences and small comforts
Traffic jams on the way to and from work are a bonus, laundry never seems to dry, and humidity levels inside the house are higher than usual, leading to mold growth if you neglect maintenance. Still, the luxury of reading a book with a warm cup of coffee or enjoying a soothing movie as background music while listening to the rain outside offers a unique comfort. Even as I write this blog post, it's raining outside.
Waiting for the coming spring
Every day, I browse golf course websites and joke around with the question, "When will the golf courses reopen?" But I also believe that all this rain will make Sydney greener, and I know that sooner or later, the rain will stop, late winter will pass, and warm spring will come again. So, regardless of the weather forecast, I look forward to blue skies tomorrow, or rather, this weekend.
